Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne was so inspired by the life story of the former first lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos, that he decided to collaborate with dancebeat guru Fatboy Slim to create a disco-influenced concept album based on everything from Marcos’ childhood spent in poverty to her departure from the palace. With musical contributions from Fatboy Slim (Norman Cook), David Byrne’s lyrics and songs beautifully presents and focuses on Imelda Marcos’ key relationship with her childhood caretaker Estrella Cumpas. Bryne has invited other famous vocalists to help interpret the story of the 80-year-old “Steel Butterfly” (as she has been famously referred as in the media) including Florence Welch (of Florence + The Machine), St. Vincent, Martha Wainwright, Cyndi Lauper, Sharon Jones (of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings), Sia, Santigold, and Tori Amos. Here Lies Love is a two-disc album set named after the inscription Marcos reportedly wants on her tombstone and will be released February 23, 2010 accompanied by a descriptive book and DVD. Blood Into Wine, Maynard James Keenan from Tool’s New Documentary
Blood Into Wine, the eagerly awaited documentary on Tool/Puscifer front man Maynard James Keenan and his vineyard partner Eric Glomski’s mission to bring notoriety and respect to Northern Arizona’s burgeoning wine industry, will premiere at the W Hotel in Scottsdale, AZ on Feb. 19 at 7:00 pm.
While the film focuses on Keenan’s winemaking, Blood Into Wine gives a larger picture of the often reclusive singer. “Maynard is as mysterious and complex as rumored so we don’t know exactly why he allowed our cameras and questions into his world for the winemaking year of 2009,” explains co-director Ryan Page.
“But once we got past his pitbulls and his crossbows we were surprised that Maynard was open with us challenging the perception of him as a celebrity winemaker and the notion that making wine in Arizona is like making wine on the moon. Maynard and Eric continue to surprise the winemaking world right now,” co-director Christopher Pomerenke adds.
Co-directed by Ryan Page and Christopher Pomerenke (Moog, The Heart is a Drum Machine), the documentary was shot using multiple Red One cameras, allowing cinematographer Cary Truelick to capture the craggy landscape surrounding Keenan’s vineyards in stunning detail. Editor Robert Beadle skillfully worked with over 200 hours of footage to help craft the story of two pioneer winemakers in an unforgiving region. Blood Into Wine was Produced by Chris “Topper” McDaniel, Ryan Page, Jason Stall, and Christopher Pomerenke. The movie features Keenan, Eric Glomski, Milla Jovovich, Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim (of Adult Swim’s Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job!), Patton Oswalt and many more.
Nationwide screenings will be announced shortly with a DVD release coming Spring 2010. Appropriately themed live music from Tool, “Sober” is available below.

Melt-Banana and Tera Melos

Tera Melos is one of those amazing experimental bands that you can try to describe and just fall flat. They do pretty much everything that you could possibly imagine that’s awesome and do it damn well. Toss in ambient, weird time signatures (that actually work and don’t sound contrived), a bevy of effects/samples, and all of this from one a trio of dudes from California. Stunning. Shine it up and crank up the speakers. Oh and check them out live with seminal experimental maestros Melt-Banana on the West Coast…

Stationary Odyssey Announces FREE new EP and tour

Post-rock-punk-ambient-prog-grind-rockers Stationary Odyssey have today released a FREE digital EP titled “Johnfriend”. This digital EP is an accompaniment to the 8-track mini-opus ‘Sons of Boy’ – which will be released worldwide November 10, 2009 on Joyful Noise Recordings.
The “Mud Center” Indiana-based duo of Aaron Tanner and Brett Siler released their previous full-length “Head! Foot! And The Pink Axe” on Joyful Noise back in 2006. One split with Child Bite later, they have resurfaced with the more polarized “Sons Of Boy”. Featuring a host of guest musicians such as Chris Schlarb (Asthmatic Kitty, I Heart Lung), Shawn Knight (Child Bite), and Aaron Tanner’s seven-year-old son – the Stationary Odyssey boys have created an 8-track mini-opus of face-melting moments alongside crystalline spasms of beauty.
With the Johnfriend EP we get a glimpse into the new Odyssey album wrapped in feedback-laden amusement. The EP contains a new track from the album, a feedback-laden cover of T-Rex’s “Children of the Revolution”, a remix, and an A Capella demo.
