Lions Lions – From What We Believe

Boston’s hardcore outfit Lions Lions is a melodic strong band that doesn’t believe in just playing shows to play shows. Instead, the group dominates the stage, often expressing every single solitary emotion that they’ve felt since the last tour with dripping sweat authority. Smart harmonies dominate each song, vocally taking the band into the realm of visionary as well as visceral. Produced by Alan Day and Dan O’Connor of Four Year Strong, “From What We Believe” is the perfect album for big-time fans of Thursday and Therefore I Am – of course the band features ex-members of that group so that’s pretty understandable. Rangy guitars ruminate over vowels of melody while the drumming punctuates the sweet and salty posterior of a well-worked out body amid a grunge-filled universe. Niiice.

Energy – Invasions of the Mind

Boston area band Energy is not your average turn-key melodic hardcore band of disaffected youths blabbering on about how hard their suburban lives are. “Invasions of the Mind” is an experience of pure pop-punk bliss lifted with three-part vocal harmonies that are surprisingly spot-on by self-taught crooner Jason Tankerley. Tremendous melodies and hugely impacting harmonies crunch the listener with a sound that is part Saves the Day and part Bane–mainly the best parts combined for a perfect forging of melodic hardcore punk.

Static Radio NJ – An Evening of Bad Decisions

New Brunswick, New Jersey has become the home base of several good hardcore and punk acts in the last decade or so. Some have even made it out of the local scene to go on to bigger and better (depends on your perspective of course) things, that Ronen Kaufman wrote about in his memoir, “New Brunswick, New Jersey Goodbye: Bands, Dirty Basements, and the Search“. Static Radio NJ follows in the footsteps of fellow Jersey natives Lifetime with their sophomore and slightly longer follow-up to their well-received debut “One for the Good Guys”. Unfortunately they may be trying to be too hard to play the sentry role to Lifetime, following so closely in their footsteps they’re just mirroring them. Melodic hardcore punk can be amazing when it has an ounce of originality in it. This is mediocrity and makes one cringe with copyright violations well in mind.
