Canasta — We Were Set Up Buy it at Amazon
Chicago’s Canasta is a sextet that develops sounds that may be most associated with orchestral pop, art rock, and indie pop but perhaps should just be labeled as ‘pop’. Because that’s what they write, darn it. Sure there’s churning guitars that never seem to level out—more like the wavelength of a sine wave, it goes up and down equally—and plenty of backing instruments that construct a wall of sound. But when you take more than a glance at their work, you realize that these hooks are just trying to be a well-fashioned pop song. And that’s okay! Moody emotional epic songs that are sugary, fantastic, and most importantly damn catchy.
