Virgin of the Birds — Mixed Choir Buy it at Amazon
Jon Rooney (Morning Spy) is helped on “Mixed Choir” by Lovely Sparrows’ founder Shawn Jones and drummer Jeb Fowler. Together the group crafted intimate lo-fi art folk rock and apartment pop. Hazy indie pop choruses are constructed with your standard fare as well as more exotic instruments like the glockenspiel, e-bow, fretless bass, and saxophone. I’ve already been a big fan of Rooney’s amazing indie label Abandoned Love Records (even if I totally just don’t the Capstan Shafts obnoxious noise) which features such great indie underground faves as the aforementioned Lovely Sparrows as well as Grumpy Bear. Talent this unblemished doesn’t run deep with most everyone else on the planet, Rooney must be damn proud.
