Band Spotlight
Chiodos
Perhaps no one can explain the sheer ferocity and timid quietness it is better than when vocalist Craig Owens says “we don’t want to let the kids down” when discussing the group’s intense vocals live at shows. Well they never let a single kid down with their vicious assault on the ears and grip on the jugular...

Jamie Randolph — Villain Buy it at Amazon
Treading water alongside the likes of alt. country, indie rock, blues, and Americana, Jamie Randolph’s “Villain” isn’t the enemy of anyone. Indeed he might just morph into the hero of melodic Americana music everywhere. His deft lyrics combined with an honest undertone of guitars and quiet vocals make of a Jackson Brown and Ryan Adams smelting. Pop hooks abound on this one!

The Prix — It's All In the Way That You Trip Buy it at Amazon
Damn the title of the album is almost longer than the length of this three-song EP. The Prix make up for its brevity with supreme catchiness and the urge to keep this sucker on ‘repeat’ for quite a while. Psych-pop is a continuing to emerge genre and The Prix are more than welcome to help usher the whole sucker in damn it!

The Dark Romantics — Some Midnight Kissin' Buy it at Amazon
I guess it’s alright to like Joy Division a whole lot.

The Mooney Suzuki — Have Mercy Buy it at Amazon
Bad news comes in bunches doesn’t it? When Sammy James Jr. learned his father was passing away from cancer it was while his band was dropped from Columbia during the ridiculous Sony-BMG merger and the rhythm section of that band was once again tossed into the air. But he didn’t give up and put the finishing touches on “Have Mercy”. Now this mod rock group is with V2 Artemis Records and are fully embracing late ‘60’s, early ‘70’s soulful rock ‘n’ roll. Plenty of big choruses and loud distorted hollow body guitars are touched off with Motown vocals and energetic jangling organ. The best part is that while they are (right or wrong) aligned with the garage rock movement alongside the myriad of other “the” bands like The Strokes and The Hives (both of whom they toured with), The Mooney Suzuki is actually doing something completely different and refreshing within the classic rock umbrella.

Carey Ott — Lucid Dream Buy it at Amazon
Power pop that’s softer and gentler than most would expect. Carey Ott’s voice is tough but never raw or strained. Instead his sound is of the Elvis Costello field and casts a wide net to reel in the masses with his powerful ballads. Gripping rock music that is fit for any size venue because the music is passionate and addictive enough to ensnare you in a stadium or a small nightclub.

SJ Tucker — Sirens Buy it at Amazon
S.J. Tucker impressed me almost a year and a half ago with her dynamic and deliberate “Tangles”. She returns with splendor on her fashionable pop album “Sirens”. Deftly crafting perfect singer/songwriter ballads penned from the feminine perspective, “Sirens” is a whirlwind of far-from-cautious harmonies and strong pop tendencies. She remains a clever, honest and sincere singer/songwriter.

The Colour — Between Earth and Sky Buy it at Amazon
Yawn, we’ve heard the Rolling Stones before. Just because you hire a fancy dancy producer in Jacquire King, he of Modest Mouse, Tom Waits, and Kings of Leon fame, doesn’t mean that your derivative garage rock will be good.

MRNORTH — Fear & Desire Buy it at Amazon
When it comes down to it, human emotion can really be summed up just a couple of emotions and MRNORTH knows that on their follow-up to their Digi EP, “Fear & Desire”. Haunting melodies provide the backdrop for which this New York City-based group builds an exhausting energetic group of songs. Steve Lyon produced and engineered it and he was a perfect fit as he’s worked with gothic New Wave groups like The Cure and Depeche Mode while it was mixed by Keith Hilldebrant (Nine Inch Nails). Their sonic smoothness gives the album a gothic vibe while the tight vocal harmonies enlist a range that Thom Yorke would be proud of. Good stuff.

Christians & Lions — More Songs For Dreamsleepers & the Very Awake Buy it at Amazon
Hip indie folk for the generation who never grew up with a Starbucks on every corner, Christians & Lions perform avant garde indie pop that is enlightening and encouraging all at once. Seeping with dripping wet melodies and intelligent lyrics, “More Songs for Dreamsleepers & the Very Awake” manages to continuously thrive on gutsy throw-back riffs and rustic pop vocals.

Airspace — Airspace Buy it at Amazon
Surprising Brit-pop from Belfast, Northern Ireland that scratches out melodies from floor-filling rockers like “Angel Unleashed” to the dark and moody atmospherics of “Candle”. You hear the influence of U2 and Travis throughout this self-titled EP. Recorded with the help of producer John Hampton (R.E.M., Raconteurs, The Replacements), it’s a soulful journey of pop-rock memories that won’t fade into obscurity very quickly.
