Perhaps no one can explain the sheer ferocity and timid quietness it is better than when vocalist Craig Owens says “we don’t want to let the kids down” when discussing the group’s intense vocals live at shows. Well they never let a single kid down with their vicious assault on the ears and grip on the jugular...

Di Evantile - Inertia
Di Evantile - Inertia
Sunday, December 9th, 2007
http://dievantile.com/
My immediate response to ‘Inertia’ was, “Oh no, digital pitter-patter, this is going to be boring; all the sampled midi stuff is not really music anyway.” Then, right about the time I decided to put aside my often stuffy, somewhat elitist attitudes regarding the conventions of musical expression – you know, acoustical instruments, the sound of human fingers across metal or nylon strings, the nuances and timbres present in the fiber of skin covered drums, the natural decay of volume following a cymbal crash or the subtle overtones the ear discerns lofting from the metal alloys – I began to get drawn into a kind of haunting pull from this composer’s expression.
As I listened, I realized I was responding from a primal place. This composer has found an effective basis of form and expression that corresponds with human emotion. I do find that interesting considering the aural medium is digitally constructed. Di Evantile has a good grasp of the tools available to him and, as any good craftsman will, orchestrates the “voices” into a good marriage. I especially like his use of the glass bottle sound on the first track, ‘Inertia.’
As the fairly well studied percussionist I am, I figured I’d grow weary of the rhythmic ostinato and four-bar phrasing present in most all of the tracks. Things are kept interesting, however by subtly offering differing voices to color the texture. I think one call be lulled into a sense of over simplicity regarding the form, but I think that’s exactly why it works so well. There is breathing room in the phrasing allowing one to accept and really hear why the next change makes sense. This is especially true for the track, ‘Glassy Cracker’ and ‘Element of Happiness.’ There is certainly a sense of overall form to the CD as a whole and one could make a case for that, though that may or may not have been the intention. With the first four tracks in the key of A minor and the journey to the final track, ‘Decompressed’, a sort of hymnal sign off, I did have a sense of connection between the pieces; a kind of walk through someone’s dream.
If you are looking for mood music, meditative background with a lover and a glass of wine or a companion to exercise or road travel, you should get this CD. Even if you’re a bit of a stuffy elitist like me, you owe it to yourself to hear and appreciate what Di Evantile is doing with his tools of the trade.

Tony Adamo's STRAIGHT UP DEAL on JazzRadio 94.1 FM
Tony Adamo
Bay side vocalist Tony Adamo (San Francisco) doesn't waste anytime getting into funky baritone interpretations of R&B, straight ahead jazz tunes and a wicked “Lolita”. This is a great CD for lots of good track reasons. The Tower of Power Horns are found on five tracks. This is a gritty and soulful album with lots of musical choices. I'll kick off with Stolen Moments on the next show. By all means don't pass this up it deserves a second listen-The Helen Simons Show INFO on Tony Adamo www.myspace.com/tonyrocadamo

KEYBOARDIST MARSHALL STYLER PLAYED JAZZ, ROCK’N’ROLL, SOUTHERN ROCK AND PROGRESSIVE-ROCK BEFORE TURNING TO NEW AGE MUSIC
MARSHALL STYLER
A FACE IN THE CLOUDS
A former rock star, Marshall Styler is a pianist and synthesist who turned his back on that part of his career and now creates impressionistic new age music as heard on this CD, A FACE IN THE CLOUDS.
This new musical career began in 1990 when he recorded his first solo album, the regionally-released CAMDEN ROAD. In 1992 Styler began releasing an acclaimed, best-selling series of new age, emotion-filled, piano-and-synthesizer CDs beginning with his RED RIVER TRIOLOGY comprised of the albums BLUEFIELDS, MOCKINGBIRD STATION and RED RIVER CROSSING, all containing musical impressions of the Hill Country of Central Texas where Marshall now lives. He continued to mine these themes in subsequent releases – JERICHO, THE TWILIGHT CONCERTOS and the new A FACE IN THE CLOUDS. Selections of his original music were joined with breath-taking photographic images by James Innes to create the DREAMAKER DVD. The only time Marshall has strayed away from writing his own material was with SILENT NIGHT, containing his renditions of 14 traditional Christmas carols.
Styler explains his music by saying: “I consider myself an impressionist in the spirit of the French Impressionist painters – Degas, Monet and Renoir. They worked with color and emotion, and have a powerful elegance, and those are qualities I strive for in my music.”
That seems valid after listening to this hauntingly-lovely instrumental CD. Styler also says he is influenced by people’s strong emotions and by the Central Texas scenery around where he now lives. Apparently these are things that inspire his music, and several of the song titles reflect his Texas lifestyle.
This is a fine new age album in the classic piano-with-synth-backing style.

DIABLO ROYALE Return to ZO2's ROCK ASYLUM
ZO2's Rock Asylum @ Arlene's Grocery
NYC's Monthly Rock n' Roll Revival
Featuring DIABLO ROYALE
Friday December 21 @ 8PM
Admission $10.00
ZO2's Rock Asylum, NYC's monthly rock n' roll revival at Arlene's Grocery, is proud to present a special return performance by DIABLO ROYALE.
ZO2's ROCK ASYLUM:
Once a month, NYC's Lower East Side is converged upon by fans starving and hungry for great rock n' roll. Diablo Royale is a regular part of this event and will be bringing their dynamic, high energy show for the 4th time on Fri, Dec 21st at 8 PM. With 5 amazing NYC bands crammed into a show conceived of and headlined by NYC's rock n' roll royalty, ZO2, fans get there early and latecomers are often disappointed as they're turned away at the door. Raucous rock n' roll, belly dancers, a burlesque artist and free giveaways keep the energy at a fever pitch. Since it's first show on May 13, 2006, ZO2's Rock Asylum has been likened to a revival! ...but maybe it's just a restatement of the obvious. Rock n' roll is doing what it's always done - bringing huge numbers of people together for unrivaled music and the thrill of the show! Hosted by Cherioke " The Game Girl".
Rock N' Roll: loud, proud, and smothered in attitude...that's the jam that NYC hard rock quintet, Diablo Royale, kicks out. Taking their influences from bands ranging from Aerosmith to Soundgarden to Zeppelin, the final result can be best described as an original and unique sound that is all their own. The band shines live with dynamic, high energy shows that are developing a loyal and rapidly growing fan base. Diablo Royale has developed a tremendous stage presence that makes the audience FEEL the music instead of just hearing it. Following the launch of their critically acclaimed debut CD and a summer tour that included gigs at Arlene's Grocery, Crash Mansion, Knitting Factory, and Snitch, Diablo Royale is on a mission to deliver raw Rock N' Roll to the masses.
ZO2:Melding the funk and swagger of the 70s with modern arrangements, harmonies and lyrics, ZO2 is single-handedly infusing the rock world with the energy and excitement it has so long been missing. ZO2's debut independent release, "Tuesdays & Thursdays" won the band surprising attention. Within weeks of its release, ZO2 was on the main stage opening for Kiss and Poison on their entire 40 city national, VH1 sponsored "Rock the Nation" tour. Featuring brothers Paulie Z (vocals, guitar) and David Z (vocals, bass guitar) and Joey Cassata (drums, vocals), the members' individual musical achievements are noteworthy: David as the bassist for the enormously successful Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Joey in the highly successful and critically acclaimed Blue Man Group and Paulie as a featured vocalist on many of Howard Stern's infamous song parodies and also as the creator of NYC's popular ZO2's Rock Asylum featuring local and national rock artists each month.

Kendall Jane Meade of Mascott News
Kendall Jane Meade ( Mascott, Helium, the Spinanes, and Sparklehorse)Features Original Music in Highwire Theatre's
Iphigenia at Aulis
Highwire Theatre is proud to feature music by Kendall Jane Meade of Mascott (a former member of Juicy, Helium, the Spinanes and Sparklehorse) in their Fall production of Iphigenia at Aulis. For her first foray into the theater, Ms. Meade has written music to be performed by the Chorus of Euripides’ Iphigenia at Aulis. Her task was to write music that expressed the different personalities and perspectives of the Chorus with each shift of tone in the play. She met that challenge head-on, creating music with a consistently earthy, feminine form of expression; and yet, each piece sets a dramatically different tone. There is a sense of both play and tragedy in her music, and her emotive harmonies explore both the tension and the intermingling of the two. Ms. Meade, with the aide of Musical Director Evan Greene, has worked closely with the musicians that make up the Chorus and has created a unique, cohesive band of performers. In praise of the music, Greene has said, “Kendall weaves together pure melodies and dissonant chords that not only augment Euripides’ words, but provide haunting resonance in the present day.”
Kendall Jane Meade is a former member of Juicy, Helium, the Spinanes and Sparklehorse. She has made three albums as Mascott. Her first EP was reviewed in Spin magazine. Her second album, Follow the Sound, was critically acclaimed and produced by Jim O’Rourke and members of the Ladybug Transistor. She released her latest album, Dreamer’s Book, on her own label, Red Panda Records. Starbucks/Hear Music featured the title track of this most recent album on a compilation. After hearing one of her songs on XM radio, the music supervisor of "The OC" used her song TURN/OFF, TURN ON in an episode of the show. She also co-wrote a holiday song for "Grey’s Anatomy", used in the Christmas episode of Season 2. Kendall is currently working on an EP entitled Arte Project at the FORT in Brooklyn, to be released sometime in 2008. www.mascottmusic.com

SOME OF GREATEST SONGS EVER WRITTEN ABOUT NEW YORK CITY APPEAR ON NEW RON KAPLAN CD
RON KAPLAN
NEW YORK
Ron Kaplan has carved out an exemplary singing career by following in the footsteps left by legends such as Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Nat King Cole and Tony Bennett. Ron has superb command of his flexible baritone that literally cocoons the listener within the cozy atmosphere of the images and feelings that he sings about. His trademarks are his sophisticated phrasing, the mature tonal qualities of his vocals, and his relaxed style.
On his just-released NEW YORK CD, Kaplan uses a hot jazz quintet. He co-produced with arranger and pianist Larry Dunlap, who has worked with Cleo Laine, Mark Murphy, The Swing Fever Big Band, Jules Broussard, Bobbe Norris and Jeremy Cohen, among others. The rhythm section is comprised of bassist Seward McCain (Vince Guaraldi Trio, Richie Cole, Kitty Margolis, Jeff Linsky, Dave Eshelman) and drummer Akira Tana (Lena Horne, Pat Metheny, Art Farmer, Zoot Sims, James Moody, Ruth Brown, Lee Konitz, Kenny Burrell). They are augmented by a horn section – Erik Jekabson on trumpet (Illinois Jacquet, John Mayer, Kermit Ruffins, Howard Fishman) and Noel Jewkes on saxophone and clarinet (Jon Hendricks, Michael Bloomfield, Mary Stallings, Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers).
Kaplan selected a dozen classic compositions that reflect a myriad of different aspects of New York City. Kaplan says: The chronology of the songs is like taking a trip to New York City, seeing the different parts of the island, experiencing the nightlife, riding the subway or the buses, walking around or going uptown.
While most of the CD’s tunes are from the first half of the Twentieth Century, the stage is set with a song from the Seventies, Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” (“He’s saying that once you’ve been a New Yorker, you always feel the pull to go back to that city.”). Lester Young’s “Jumpin’ With Symphony Sid” is about a famous New York disc-jockey playing the swing, R&B and jazz of the Forties over the air. No trip to NYC would be complete without a stop on Broadway, represented by both “Lullaby of Broadway” and a medley, “New York New York/Broadway,” where, as the lyrics say, “the night is brighter than day.” Then it’s off on a historical ride around the city with Billy Strayhorn’s classic “Take the ‘A’ Train” which became one of Duke Ellington’s signature themes. Appropriately, next comes the Ellington-penned “Drop Me Off in Harlem” and a Cotton Club standard, “Harlem Nocturne.”
The journey around the big city continues with “Forty Second Street.” Kaplan says he loves the historical content (“it talks about everything from dancing girls and chorus lines to Times Square and Wall Street”). Another side of the city is presented in “Sunday in New York” (“it reminds me of strolling along the streets and people watching”). For many years striving, struggling artists have flocked to this important entertainment capital determined “to make it” and this drama is described in the Sixties Brill Building hit “On Broadway.” Kaplan injects a little humor with the cynical tongue-in-cheek “Give It Back to the Indians,” written by tunesmiths Rogers and Hart. The recording closes with another song by the same team, “Manhattan” (“perhaps the quintessential song about New York”).
This is a classy, classic CD.

Jazz Improv Pianist Falkner Evans Releases Trio CD
FALKNER EVANS TRIO
ARC
I think Arc is Falkner Evans third or fourth CD as a leader. He is on the same label as another jazz pianist, Mike Longo. On Arc Evans is joined by bassist Belden Bullock and drummer Matt Wilson. They have all been around on the New York City jazz scene for the past couple of decades. Based on the one previous album by Evans that I have heard, he seems to be getting smoother, more relaxed and more confident in the studio. What makes this music interesting, whether they trio is tackling originals or compositions by bigtime jazz-makers like Coltrane or Wayne Shorter, is that the trio does two things extremely well that could be in conflict with one another. They state the melody strongly and never completely let go of it, but they also embrace the improvisational center section of the tunes where they stretch out and take turns soloing. This isn’t as easy as it sounds. Some jazz acts go off the deep end and become so avant-garde that the melodic content disappears while they are having fun zooming all over the place. But Evans knows how to keep subtly stating the melody line whether he is laying back doing rhythm or even when he is soloing. This makes for enjoyable listening whether you are a hardcore jazz lover or just a fan of piano-based jazzy instrumental music. There is a lot to like here. There is generally a swinging rhythm plus hints of blues and classical that creep in, but in a jazzy way. I would have to suppose this is really where modern jazz has been heading – coupling the traditional aspects of be-bop with enough innovativeness to make it contemporary for this era. Pretty cool when you stop and think about it.

Discrete Encounter Release "2B1"
NYC'S DISCRETE ENCOUNTER
TO RELEASE THEIR LATEST DANCE/ROCK/ELECTRONICA
RECORDING "2B1"
www.discreteencounter.com
Rising stars on the NYC rock and dance scenes, Discrete Encounter will release their latest rock / electronica CD, "2B1", in early 2008. Renown in NYC for their engrossing live shows and striking stage presence, Discrete Encounter are a genre-blending fusion that embraces their influences yet maintain a unique and intriguing sound. "2B1" can easily fit into Rock, Dance, and Alternative Music programming. DE are fronted by the founders Taras Mashtalir and Natasha Romanova. Taras is the brilliant composer of music that can fill a concert hall or a dance floor. Natasha brings depth, mystery, and sensuality to her lyrics and vocals. Together they have created a deftly crafted artistic statement with "2B1".
"Discrete Encounter creates crisp, chic electronic music, merging glam rock with electronica in a serious and sexy direction that picks up where electroclash's ironic 80's stunts paused the genre a couple of years ago. Discrete Encounter maintains the technoid melodiousness of groups like Lamb and Olive while releasing the sweaty, kinetic, rock n' roll energy of other rockers like the YeahYeahYeah's and The White Stripes. Intriguing, subtle, yet entirely accessible, Discrete Encounter sounds like everything the right downtown night is all about." Etomie Entertainment
Discrete Encounter was formed in 2003 by composer/producer Taras Mashtalir and singer/songwriter Natasha Romanova.
Taras Mashtalir is a classical guitarist turned electronic producer who began professional recording and performing in Moscow and St. Petersburg before moving to NYC. His work also includes audio installations and sountracks for independent films and animation.
Natasha Romanova is a trained vocalist with a degree in classical music. Prior to the US, she performed in Ukraine and Russia on national radio and TV. Besides writing lyrics for Discrete Encounter, she is a prolific published writer of poetry and prose.
Discrete Encounter also include Visual Projectionist, Stas, who brings an extra dimension to their live show.
The band has been collaborating with different DJs including Roman S, Animaltek and now their current addition DJ Plexus. Renowned in the New York underground scene, he brings an additional sound design to DE live. DJ PLexus usually spins his own DJ set after a DE show, so that dancing and celebration continue long into the night.
