TRUSTCompany

The ascent into the mainstream has been a steady one for TRUSTcompany, and is worth some notice. After struggling to find their niche in the independent scene, a small band named 41down caught the ear of several record labels, who all expressed interest in marketing the band to a larger audience. The group eventually signed to Geffen Records, changed their name and recently released their debut effort, "The Lonely Position of Neutral". In the following interview fans catch a glimpse at what TRUSTcompany feel concerning their rising fame, how the internet has helped expose the band to listeners around the world, and the difficult task it is to understand the term "crossover". [Editor's note: Perhaps they would have been more comfortable with the term nu-metal or pimp rock?] As you will find out, this is a band that cares little whether they stand out in a hectic music scene, and are simply looking to enjoy the opportunity they have been given.

Smother: Being a young band, how was your experience in the independent scene, and what led to you signing a deal with Geffen/Interscope?

TRUSTCompany: Coming up through the Indie scene was very good for us because it was relatively challenging; The indie experience makes you really appreciate everything you have. Geffen deal came about through a "buzz" in the industry that led to numerous showcases.

Smother: Why did you change your name from 41down, and what does TRUSTcompany represent?

TRUSTCompany: Well, 41down really didn't mean anything to begin with, we just thought that no one would ever use that number (back in 1997). Then, Sum41 comes along, and we decided to change the name after signing to Geffen. TrustCo really doesn't and didn't have a specific meaning, we just wanted to have a name that sounded different or somethin'.

Smother: Are you worried that listeners will pass you by as "just another.." crossover band, and what would be your argument as to what makes TC different than every other band currently inhabiting the music scene?

TRUSTCompany: I wouldn't necessarily say that we do anything different, we just write the music that we write, if that's different...cool, if not... so be it....btw what the hell is a crossover band anyway....lol.

Smother: Your video for the single Downfall had a unique visual effect depicting a forceful wind rippling the faces of everyday pedestrians on the street. Did the band come up with this concept, and were you happy with the end results?

TRUSTCompany: No, the concept came from Marcos Siega, and we dug it. The end result was killer, we thought.

Smother: What bands/musicians inspired you to begin performing musically? Who would you consider your favorite artists currently? TRUSTCompany

TRUSTCompany: Just the whole music thing in general, probably, inspired all of us. None of us really remembered when we didn't want to perform. James had been doing recitals since he was 5. Currently, we all love bands like the Deftones, Glassjaw, Jimmy Eats World, and those kinds of bands, but that's definitely not the only things we listen to. James listens to a bunch of weird stuff.

Smother: Recently Downfall has picked up speed on the airwaves and was even used as the theme song for the WWE's latest pay-per-view special. How does it feel to flick through channels and see/hear your music playing, and knowing that television shows are using the song? It must be a little staggering...

TRUSTCompany: Surreal....."what dream am I in?"

Smother: Are you supportive of the Internet as a way to propel a band's career, and how has it personally helped to make TRUSTcompany the band you are today?

TRUSTCompany: Wow, you know napster and such has really helped us get our music out to the world. Before getting on Geffen, we had emails and such from all over the world.

Smother: Have you collected any memorable tour stories as of yet, and what are your plans as far as touring throughout the remainder of this year?

TRUSTCompany: Touring, in general, is a huge incredible memory. This is a dream come true. I hope we continue to tour with whoever will take us.

Smother: Has it sunk in yet that this is your full-time job now, or is it still too early to stand back and realize that you are leading the rock star dream of being signed and touring with big names?

TRUSTCompany: Well, we don't take anything for granted, and we often talk to each other and talk about how happy we are to be given this opportunity.

Smother: Any final words/comments before you wrap this up?

TRUSTCompany: Thanks for taking notice to us, and I hope our 'cross-over' careers give us an opportunity to talk to you guys again. Oh yeah, support your local music scene. So much talent and music is left unappreciated and your local scene can really help the cause out!!!!!
