Interviews: Soulfly

Soulfly

By: Mr. Christopher

Interview conducted with Marcello of Soulfly.

Smother: How's the tour been going so far?

Marcello: Great. We've been doing this tour for about a year and a half now. We just finished a European tour and now we're doing our own headlining tour with Hatebreed, Neurosis, and Will Haven. It's quite interesting touring with those guys.

Smother: I've been hearing stories about VOD and Madball being dropped from Roadrunner Records. Do you know anything about why bands are being dropped?

Marcello: No, not personally.

Smother: We heard Roy might be leaving the band. Is that true?

Marcello: This is something we don't know about yet because we haven't talked about it. I definitely don't know what's going or what you're talking about.

Smother: It's just a rumor someone from our staff had heard. What the weirdest moment you guys have had on tour, so far?

Marcello: Weird? I don't know…a bunch of shit (laughs). Max almost got arrested a few days ago. We were playing Atlanta and Max said…well, sometimes he says, "Fuck the police," well, a lot of times he says that, but in that particular show one cop got offended and tried to arrest him. And also at the same show, the kids and security were having problems and this one security guard starting punching this kid and we got pissed.

Smother: How do you get your clothes clean while on tour?

Marcello: (laughs) We try to get as often as possible, but sometimes you don't have time and your shit's all over the place.

Smother: Do you just stop somewhere to do it?

Marcello: Usually we have a hotel or something on a day off or just take a cab and get the shit done.

Smother: So, what do you think about the hype about the millenium and the "world ending" and all that?

Marcello: I think it's more like Hollywood type of thing. It's going to be a normal year like any other. But, you know, if it messes up some people's minds, well, that's there business.

Smother: What's the most difficult part of being on an extended tour?

Marcello: Probably being with each other (laughs). Sometimes we go nuts. It's like a marriage, ya know? That's why it's called a tribe…it's a family.

Smother: What happens after this tour?

Marcello: We have a couple of offers for the next couple of months, so we'll decide whether it's worth it or we may just take the time to write some new stuff.

Smother: Have you written anything new on the road?

Marcello: Yeah, we have. We hope to record around the end of the year.
