Interviews: Slunt
Want a rockin' good time? Then check out Slunt, a crossbreed of punk, raunchy rock-n-roll, and in your face female aggression. We sat down at the terminal and shot barbs at Slunt's Abby about liquor, bein' a cheerleader, and the dirtiest non-cuss word of a moniker of a name. Read
our review of their self-titled EP.
Smother: How did you guys form and what inspired your sound?
Abby: We all met through the New York City rock scene. inspired by nice boobies, good cheese & pabst blue
ribbon beer. oh, and jimmy page.
Smother: Why did you guys choose the name "Slunt"?
Abby: Cuz its a funny word that
sounds dirty but its not. gets people thinking!
Smother: With such a raunchy sound and moniker, how would you guys describe one
of your live shows?
Abby: Lots of hair flippin', head bangin', tongue waggin'
n cussin'. and we're very loud. pat doesn't like to turn down!
Smother: Speaking of gigging, what would be your ideal gig---any band alive or
dead?
Abby: Queens of the Stone Age or Foo Fighters!
Smother: What's been your favorite show thus far?
Abby: We had so many great shows on
the Manson tour. The Avalon in Boston was wild. Really fun crowd! So was
The Tabernacle in Atlanta. We signed a lot of boobies that nite!
Smother: Do you find that as a female-fronted band, that you get more male fans
who want to see you as a "hot" act rather than a get-down-and-dirty hard
punk rock act?
Abby: I think people are definitely intrigued by the "chick"
aspect of the band. that's usually the first thing that grabs people's
attention. then they think we propbably wont rock that hard BECAUSE
we're chicks. then they see the show & change their minds!
Smother: I really thought that the video that accompanied your self-titled EP was
a great glimpse into your silly and fun-loving side. What inspired you
guys to throw that together and put it down as a music video?
Abby: We just had all this great footage
documenting our crazy world & thought "hey, wouldn't it be fun to put
this all together to music and share it with everyone?" so that's what
we did. its a great look into the world of slunt. trust me, there is
NEVER a dull moment!
Smother: In this day and age, the Internet has really become the focal point to
discovering new bands. How do you guys think that the Internet has
helped your band develop and grow?
Abby: It's by far the fastest, easiest way
to reach people. we love using the internet as a tool to spread the word
about SLUNT & let people hear our music. we're especially into myspace.
its so great for networking & we're all big myspace junkies!
Smother: How has Repossession Records been treating you? so awesomely!
Abby: They're making it possible for our dreams to become a reality & we are SO lucky
to have them!
Smother: Since most in the press will most likely compare you to Hole and The
Donnas instead of perhaps the more appropriate L7, how do you try to
shed off those types of inevitable comparisons? What's been the
worst thing said about you guys?
Abby: Someone (I forget who) once said that
talking about music is like tapdancing about architecture. I hate being
compared to other bands. people always ask us who we sound like & im
like "just come see us & hear for yourself!" what's funny is, there
arent that many female fronted staright-up rock bands out there, so
anyone that hears us automatically compares us to those same bands which
we sound NOTHING like. they think "oh there's a chick singing so they
must sound like the donnas!" not.
Smother: Jagermeister or light beer? jager!
Abby: Light beer is for pussies.
Smother: Was it really true that one of you was a cheerleader and another a prom
queen?
Abby: Ha! That would be me! = ) I indeed was prom queen AND I was
CAPTAIN of the cheerleaders! in my defense though, I WAS the only
cheerleader wth blue nails! (hehe)
Smother: What's currently rocking your Playstation/Xbox/Gamecube?
Abby: Don't own one. that's for boys.
Smother: Any movie recommendations or music that you'd like to tell others about?
Abby: Check out
Napoleon Dynamite. Funny shit. And make sure to buy the Eagles
of Death Metal album. Tt rocks.
Smother: We always ask this one question of all the people we interview to see
who gives us the funniest or most interesting response--What would
do/say if you met a guy named Carbomb?
Abby: "I think I made out with your
sister cherry once."
