Smother Magazine Band Spotlight: The Mars Volta

Everyone is talking about The Mars Volta and rightfully so. Their follow-up to their groundbreaking debut full-length "De-Loused in the Comatorium" has both music critics and fans going ga-ga. Combining post-hardcore ferocity with progressive rock, Latin rhythms, and some of the most ingenious soundscapes imagined, The Mars Volta aren't just a band that's hard to define, they're a band that's hard to even begin to describe. Their latest album "Frances the Mute" is inspiring and transcends all expectations, somehow becoming one with the rock gods and forging their own place in rock history with undeniably the best album of 2005. The ex-members of the much hallowed At the Drive-In make ATDI fans forget about their former band writing music that's going to easily stand the test of time. Enlisting friends like John Frusciante and Flea to help out doesn't hurt either. Frenetic and always energetic, this cerebral addition to progressive indie rock will have you permanantly pressing repeat on the CD player.
