Smother Magazine Band Spotlight: Saul Williams

Last Band Back to Index Next Band

Saul Williams
Saul Williams is not only a poet, but a modern day visionary in the realm of spoken word artistry, and also the first poet/spoken word artist to ever be featured as Artist of the Month here at Smother. First noticed for his work in the Trimark film SLAM (which he also co-wrote), Williams went on to sign a recording contract with American Recordings. Saul Williams is not only a poet and musician, but also an established author, having his unique poetry featured in two of his own books as well as a multitude of articles in such esteemed publications such as the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Time Magazine and The Source. Working with Rick Rubin, Williams has achieved a hands-down masterpiece with Amethyst Rock Star. Combining poetic verse with hip-hop beats and drum&bass experimentation, Amethyst Rock Star allows the world to recognize the voice Saul Williams possesses. His work speaks of socio-political uneasiness and honesty, yet the urban tones help convey Williams thoughts to the common man. Saul is currently on the road as part of this winter's SnoCore Icicle Ball tour alongside the likes of Spearhead and Ozomatli. Amethyst Rock Star is in stores everywhere.
